October, my complex frienemy.

One year ago I started a month of facebook posts of quotes from my favorite fandoms in alphabetical order (plus numbers 1-5). I enjoyed creating the list and trying to get all my favorites in. It was an attempt to re-frame October days that often bring me down.  This month is complicated. I love Autumn and can’t wait for the golden colors to burst from the trees around me. I also carry many heavy memories of loss in this month and can get weighed down.  I copy the quotes here to preserve the happy thoughts this activity brought me and maybe to bring you some smiles too.

Avatar: The Last Airbender
Aang: “Well, I met with this guru who was supposed to help me master the Avatar State, and control this great power. But to do it, I had to let go of someone I love. And I just couldn’t.”
Uncle Iroh: “Protection and power are overrated. I think you are very wise to choose happiness and love.”

Bruce Lee
“You know what I want to think of myself? As a human being. Because, I mean I don’t want to be like ‘As Confucius say,’ but under the sky, under the heavens there is but one family. It just so happens that people are different.”

Jeff: “Oh, look, Indiana Jones and the apartment of perpetual virginity.”
Troy: “Haha! Chop busted, fellow adult. Chop busted.”

Doctor Who
River: “You know when you see a photograph of someone you know, but it’s from years before you knew them. It’s like they’re not quite finished; they’re not done yet. Well, yes, the Doctor’s here. He came when I called just like he always does, but not my Doctor. Now, my Doctor, I’ve seen whole armies turn and run away, and he’d just swagger off back to his TARDIS and open the doors with a snap of his fingers. The Doctor in the TARDIS. Next stop: everywhere.”

Elrics (Full Metal Alchemist)
“Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy’s first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world’s one, and only, truth. But the world isn’t perfect, and the law is incomplete. Equivalent Exchange doesn’t encompass everything that goes on here, but I still choose to believe in its principle, that all things do come at a price, that there’s an ebb and a flow, a cycle, that the pain we went through did have a reward, and that anyone who’s determined and perseveres will get something of value in return, even if it’s not what they expected. I don’t think of Equivalent Exchange as a law of the world anymore. I think of it as a promise, between my brother and me. A promise that, someday, we’ll see each other again.”

Fisher & Sons (Six Feet Under)
Nate Fisher: “The fact remains, David, that the only father we are ever going to have is gone. Forever. And that sucks. But its a god damned part of life and you can’t really accept it without getting your hands dirty. Well I do accept it and I intend to honor the old bastard by letting the whole world see just how fucked up and shitty I feel that he’s dead.”

Gilmore Girls
Lorelai: “I managed to find Uno and Checkers, and Battleship and most of the pieces of Candyland. Which I figure, we can mix together to create a fabulous new game, Candyship Battleland. War never tasted so good!”

Ramirez: [after MacLeod misses him with his sword] “Crude and slow clansman, your attack was no better then that of a clumsy child.”
Connor MacLeod: “This cannot be, it’s the devil’s work.”
Ramirez: “You cannot die, MacLeod, accept it.”
Connor MacLeod: [laughs before realizing Ramirez was serious] “I hate you.”
Ramirez: “Good. That is a perfect place to start.”

Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones)
Tyrion Lannister: “Let me give you some advice, bastard, never forget what you are. The rest of the world will not. Wear it like armor, and it can never be used to hurt you.”

Joe Versus the Volcano
Luggage Salesman: “Have you thought much about luggage, Mr. Banks?”
Joe: “No, I never really have.”
Luggage Salesman: “It’s the central preoccupation of my life. You travel the world, you’re away from home, perhaps away from your family, all you have to depend on is yourself and your luggage.”
Joe: “I guess that’s true.”

Ka-tet (Dark Tower)
Roland: “First the smiles, then the lies. Last comes gunfire.”

Christian: “The most important part of your life was the time that you spent with these people. That’s why all of you are here. Nobody does it alone, Jack. You needed all of them and they needed you.”

Miyazaki (Laputa: Castle in the Sky)
Sheeta: “No matter how many weapons you have, no matter how great your technology might be, the world cannot live without love.”

Nat King Cole (The Very Thought of You)
“The mere idea of you, the longing here for you
You’ll never know how slow the moments go till I’m near to you”

Occult Odd Couple (Being Human)
George: “Haven’t you worked it out yet? Humanity is about love, and sacrifice. This doesn’t rob me of my humanity… It proves it.”

Peter, Olivia, Walter and Astrid (Fringe)
Walter: “You are my favorite thing, Peter. My very favorite thing.”

Queen (My Melancholy Blues)
“Don’t expect me
To behave perfectly
And wear that sunny smile
My guess is I’m in for a cloudy and overcast
Don’t try and stop me
‘Cause I’m heading for that stormy weather soon”

Rufus (Poses)
“The green autumnal parks conducting
All the city streets a wondrous chorus singing
All these poses oh how can you blame me
Life is a game and true love is a trophy”

Star Wars
Han Solo: “Uh, everything’s under control. Situation normal.”
Voice: “What happened?”
Han Solo: “Uh, we had a slight weapons malfunction, but uh… everything’s perfectly all right now. We’re fine. We’re all fine here now, thank you. How are you?”
Voice: “We’re sending a squad up.”
Han Solo: “Uh, uh… negative, negative. We had a reactor leak here now. Give us a few minutes to lock it down. Large leak, very dangerous.”
Voice: “Who is this? What’s your operating number?”
Han Solo: “Uh…”
[Han shoots the intercom]
Han Solo: “Boring conversation anyway. LUKE, WE’RE GONNA HAVE COMPANY!”

The Boy Who Lived (Harry Potter)
“It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”

Uzumaki, Naruto
“It’s not over when you lose, it’s over when you give up.”

Verse (Firefly)
Mal: “We’ve done the impossible, and that makes us mighty.”

Winchesters (Supernatural)
“Saving people, hunting things – the family business”

XBox and other gaming goodness
Roald Dahl: “Life is more fun if you play games.”

Yotz (Farscape)
John: “Aeryn, listen, if Scorpius gets me-”
Aeryn: “I know, shoot you.”
John: “No! No, no, shoot him!”

Zombies (Walking Dead)
Hershel: “You step outside, you risk your life. You take a drink of water, you risk your life. And nowadays you breathe, and you risk your life. Every moment now…you don’t have a choice. The only thing you can choose is what you are risking it for.”

1 Ring to Rule them All (LotR)
Samwise: “It’s like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn’t want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn’t. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something.”

221 B Baker St (Sherlock)
John Watson: “You… you told me once that you weren’t a hero. Umm, there were times I didn’t even think you were human. But let me tell you this, you were the best man, the most human… human being that I’ve ever known, and no-one will ever convince me that you told me a lie, so there. I was so alone, and I owe you so much. But, please, there’s just one more thing, one more thing, one more miracle, Sherlock, for me. Don’t be… dead. Would you do that just for me? Just stop it. Stop this.”

3000 (Futurama)
Fry: “Wait, I’m having one of those things…like a headache with pictures.”
Leela: “An idea?”
Fry: “Mmm Hmm…”

4th ed (DnD)
Gary Gygax: “Games give you a chance to excel, and if you’re playing in good company you don’t even mind if you lose because you had the enjoyment of the company during the course of the game.”

5 year mission (Star Trek, in this case – Voyager)
The Doctor: “In that book which is my memory, on the first page of the chapter that is the day when I first met you appear the words: Here begins a new life.”
